Happy 2019 from your favorite musical runners! It's been an exciting season of music the past few months and we wanted to take a minute to give you a peak into some of the things that have kept us busy. We just finished a 14 show run at the Desert Botanical Gardens in Phoenix, AZ - one of our favorite events every year called Las Noches de las Luminarias. We know we haven't been touring as heavily the past year, so it may have been a minute since we were in your town. We wanted to share some of the upcoming shows and news for everyone in the band.

Bekah and Matt recorded and produced Bekah's latest record, Seed & Silo, which she completed as an artist-in-residence for the National Parks at Homestead National Monument. The CD was released July 2018 by Sky Island Records and is available for streaming and purchase. The album was recently named one of the Top 3 Folk releases of the year by Pop Matters and was recognized by the Tucson Weekly as one of best local albums of the year in 2018. Follow Bekah's music at her website here. They have a weekend of upcoming January shows in Arizona and will be touring in the Midwest (June) and Northwest (September). In addition to collaborating with a lot of Tucson artists, Matt has also been working for an arts non-profit in Tucson, Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance, and was voted in as a board member for the Tucson Folk Festival. They will both be teaching at the new Roots and Boots music camp near Flagstaff, Arizona in June 2019.

Jen tied the knot with her guitar-strumming beau, Peter, in summer 2018 and is still living in Portland, OR where she has been active in the local arts scene. She started a new theater troupe, The Absentees, this past year and recently completed a series of stellar shows with the Ralph Radio Theater company production, "Christmas From Home".

Grace has finished a new EP under her stage name, Rising Sun Daughter, and that record is set to be released in early 2019. She has a few upcoming shows in the Southwest (LA, Phoenix), so follow her Facebook page here for show details.

Here are some reflections from Jesse:

"It is with hopeful anticipation and wistful remembrance that I announce my departure from Run Boy Run. Since founding the band on Matt's front porch, blocks south of the University of Arizona campus, we have continued to evolve and grow. Our first years, culminating with our 2011 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Contest win, were marked by the progressive take on old time you hear in our eponymous debut EP. Recorded from Matt and Bekah's bedroom in Mexico City and my living room in Tucson, we played our own take on traditional material. Soon, our arrangements became more and more complex, and we began to introduce our own songwriting. On the heels of two appearances on A Prairie Home Companion, our first full-length album, So Sang the Whippoorwill, pushed us to a new level. We took it on the road. Our time on the road developed us into better arrangers, better songwriters, and better musicians. By the time we entered Bear Creek Studios to record Something to Someone, Run Boy Run had taken another bold step towards something new: further from tradition, filled with our own songwriting, and open to new sounds. And now, Run Boy Run prepares to take another bold step forward creatively. I'm excited to hear this new direction unfold, even as it diverges from my own. I will continue to support my friends who have become like family, but now as a fan."

As we make this transition, you'll hear some great bass players from the Arizona music scene join Run Boy Run at upcoming shows, including past and present bassists from Giant Sand, Calexico, and Sweet Ghosts. -Matt, Bekah, Jen, & Grace
Run Boy Runtag:runboyrunband.com,2005:Post/48329782017-08-31T10:09:04-07:002020-12-29T00:57:29-07:00June 22, 2015 /// “Spin A Golden Thread” Music Video Premier at Bluegrass Situation

Our new videos for "Spin a Golden Thread", filmed in Kansas City by Rockhaven Films, is premiering at The Bluegrass Situation. They write:

The centerpiece of Run Boy Run's new "Spin a Golden Thread" music video is an old-time crankie -- a hand-cranked scroll of pictures that tell a story. Crankies go back to New England, Appalachia, and the mid-19th century, and some contemporary artists are introducing them to a whole new generation. Run Boy Run's crankie features artwork by Anna Cosper in a box by Sonya Montenegro.

Both the song and the panorama focus on the ties that bind us. Matt Rolland, Run Boy Run's fiddle and guitar player, says, “The song is basically a love song that alludes to our need to be connected with someone (or something) outside ourselves.”

Written by bassist Jesse Allen a couple of years back, “Spin a Golden Thread” has logged some miles. "The song's history criss-crosses the U.S.” Rolland adds, “It was written by Jesse in a garden in Connecticut two years ago, arranged by the band in Arizona's Aravaipa Wilderness on a music retreat, and then recorded at Bear Creek Studios up in Woodinville, WA, for our latest album, Something to Someone. The fact that the video was filmed in Kansas City just adds more geographic color to the history. The Tucson string band loved the crankie so much, they hoisted it out of the main video and shot a companion piece for it.

We’re Run Boy Run

A five-piece, all-acoustic folk band from Tucson, Arizona. Two fiddles, a mandolin, cello, bass, and three strong female voices singing separately and in harmony. Put another way, we're also two sets of siblings, college friends, and a husband and wife. Interwoven and intermingled, we know, but that's us.

Since we started together in 2009, we’ve been putting our “string-heavy, old-timey, not-quite-bluegrassy” spin on music familiar and original. Existing comfortably in the tension between tradition and musical frontier, our road has taken us across the country to music festivals, music clubs, and even on to National Public Radio’s “A Prairie Home Companion.” We’ve come a long away.

THE TOURING LIFE

The story of this new album, Something to Someone, really begins seven months and 25,000 miles ago. Going full-time with our music in mid-2013, we threw ourselves into the touring life. Covering more than 25,000 miles and performing in half of the continental states, we spread our open-ended music far and wide. There’s nothing like going on tour for meeting new people, hearing new stories, and seeing new places.

Our first national tour made us feel excited about where we were as a band and what we were doing. Inspired by the people, places, and new challenges we met on the road, we felt the need to record these experiences in the way we know best – making music.

Under the sun-dappled cliffs of Aravaipa Canyon Ranch in southern Arizona and the snowy hills of Flagstaff's Museum of Northern Arizona Colton House, we arranged, composed, and practiced for two weeks straight. The result was a refined selection of music that we wanted to share. It’s been an unforgettable time of intensive song-arranging, recording, and listening from morning until late-night in a beautiful, high-beamed, restored barn.
HOW YOU CAN HELP

Many of you have been a part of our past year of travel, music-making, and growth. Whether in the form of coming to live shows, following us online during the first national tour, or supporting our last album's Kickstarter, you've shared in this exciting year. There are a number of ways you can get involved in the final stretch of making this album happen. The songs are recorded, but there’s still a long way to go. We’re asking for $6000 dollars. Your contribution will help us with:

You know, the idea of being on A Prairie Home Companion was completely surreal, even after we got that phone call confirming that we’d been invited to play on the show. Before that, we thought it as far-fetched as being invited to play on The Grand Ole Opry or landing a feature in Rolling Stone. It felt so “big-time,” I guess because it is. We had the opportunity to work with Garrison Keillor, a legend in the world of radio and entertainment; we had our own dressing room, time to get to know some of the best musicians in the biz; and we played, not only for an auditorium of 3,000 people in our home-state of Arizona, but for another 4 million listeners tuning in from all over the country. Talk about exposure.

Here’s one thing that we didn’t expect, and that shocked us as much as anything else: the pure warmth and acceptance we felt upon first stepping backstage into the world of APHC. As “big-time” as it is, we were struck by how friendly and down-to-earth the cast and crew was. From the beginning, we were made to feel welcome, and to feel as if we were valued members of the show.

Needless to say, when Garrison nonchalantly strolled into our dressing room shortly following the show, MacBook in hand, staring over his thick-rimmed glasses at the screen, pawing at the mouse pad, and asked us, “When can we schedule for you people to come back on?”, we were flabbergasted and thrilled. We had very suddenly come to inhabit this world that, just one week before, had seemed so inaccessible. It was hard to believe that that man, whose resonant hum-of-a-voice we’d listened to on radio since we were but wee tykes, took to us and, in fact, wanted more of us.

We couldn’t feel more privileged, grateful, and ecstatic to have become a part of something that we’ve loved from a distance for so many years. One month later and we’re preparing to make our way up north to the icy land of St. Paul, Minnesota for another appearance on APHC.
We’ll be playing on Saturday from 5–7 PM, CST (4–6 AZ time). Has it become any less surreal? No. I’m still pinching myself.

You can read all about the first show here:

Coming to you this week live from ASU Gammage in Tempe, Arizona, it's A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor.
I’ll leave you with a few of our highlights from the show (inevitably, we will have many things to add to this list following our performance in St. Paul this Saturday). Enjoy, Bekah

Run Boy Run’s List of APHC Highlights

Grace’s initial phone call from Garrison, who was calling to inquire about a couple tunes he wanted to play with us. In a stupor, she thought for certain she’d been prank called, but, thankfully, played along.

Playing and visiting with members of The Guy’s All-Star Shoe Band and actors Sue Scott, Fred Newman, and Tim Russell Things we learned: One man (Fred Newman) makes all of those sounds! Aliens, horses, falling coconuts, you name it! Also, that Shoe Band is likely one of the most versatile and flexible bands out there—they are amazing to watch live.

Meeting fellow Arizona musician, Gail Steiger, and hearing the details of his life on an Arizona ranch through original music and poetry—incredibly moving.

Being a part of the Academy of English Majors parody with Garrison and the rest of the cast.

Watching Garrison tower over Jen as she announced that we’d be playing “Little Girl,” and then watching him stare at her from on high while replying in the way he does, “Oh…how appropriate.”

Garrison’s words of pity for “the poor orphan boy” in the band (that’s Jesse). His mom, Betty, cleared the air backstage: “Don’t worry, Garrison. Jesse’s not a poor orphan. I’m his mother.” Garrison seemed happy to make the acquaintance.

Having our website crash as a result of all the traffic that night—a good and a bad thing at the same time! We were thankful for Jesse, our software engineer, who managed to get it back up and running before the night was over.

All of the great feedback. We’re all the more excited for the release of our new album So Sang the Whippoorwill, which will include several of the tunes we played on APHC. That’ll be hot and ready on March 19th.

Playing our original music for an audience of 4 million
